Skansen rozciąga się na obszarze 94 ha. Obejmuje 79 obiektów dużej i małej architektury wiejskiej o zróżnicowanych funkcjach, budowie i konstrukcji. Budynki pochodzą z terenów wchodzących w skład Prus Wschodnich w chwili powstawania Muzeum (tj. w roku 1913): Oberlandu (Prus Górnych), Małej (Pruskiej) Litwy i okręgu sambijskiego oraz obecnych regionów północno-wschodniej Polski, z których budynki translokowano (lub odtwarzano) już po II wojnie światowej.
Są to budynki mieszkalne, sakralne, zabudowania gospodarcze i przemysłowe. Wyposażenie budynków stanowią eksponaty pokazujące tradycyjne metody pracy i obrzędy na wsi w XIX i XX wieku. Zbiory muzealne kultury materialnej oraz sztuki ludowej przekraczają 14 tys. egzemplarzy.
My zwiedziliśmy kilkanaście obiektów. Pani Agnieszka, ubrana w tradycyjny strój warmiński, barwnie opowiadała, my zaglądaliśmy do środka (nie wszędzie można było wejść) i dopowiadaliśmy historie z własnych przeżyć i według naszej wiedzy. Wiele narzędzi część z nas pamiętała z dzieciństwa, i to, jak były wykorzystywane przez naszych dziadków, np. kierat, przetaki czy żuraw. Często był to jakby powrót do czasów wiejskiej sielanki i beztroski młodych lat. Prowokował też do wspomnień o naszych przodkach.
Widzieliśmy też muzealne zwierzęta. A jest tego sporo – od koni i krów poczynając, poprzez kozy, króliki, owce, a na drobiu kończąc. Jednak nie sposób było dojrzeć wszystkiego. Grunt był trochę grząski po nocnym deszczu, a wózek Uli to zapadał się w błocie, to podskakiwał na „kocich łbach”. Więc po 2,5 godzinie zwiedzania bolały nas nie tylko nogi…
Na szczęście fizyczne trudy zostały szybko zapomniane przy zupie warmińskiej (wywar na bazie soku z kiszonej kapusty z maleńkimi mięsnymi klosikami w środku) i babce ziemniaczanej popijanej kwasem chlebowym. Pycha!
No, ale nie tylko same przyjemności czekały nas tego dnia… Korzystając z okazji, że było nas aż 12 sztuk, Dorota przedstawiła do zatwierdzenia sprawozdania finansowe z dotychczasowej działalności naszego Stowarzyszenia i załatwiliśmy inne „sprawy biurokratyczne”. Ale też poczęliśmy snuć plany na przyszłość, gdzie by tu jeszcze pojechać i co warto zobaczyć w naszym rejonie. Znaczy to tyle, że dobrze czuliśmy się razem i ta „szkolna wycieczka” należała do udanych. Następny wypad to będzie najazd na prywatną posesję Marcina (nie mylić z zajazdem, zwłaszcza ostatnim, na Litwie 😉).
